« The New Couch

My friends are probably beyond tired of hearing of my couch escapades. If you remember, I had already gotten a new couch just a few months ago. As it turns out, that couch was as hard as a rock. I never sat down and watched TV and we never had people over because it just wasn’t comfortable. I even started developing some upper-back pain because of the angle of the cushions. So - big fat lesson learned, and a renewed appreciation for craigslist: we sold the couch for just $200 less than we paid for it and moved onward and upward.

Now, I’m not as big of a furniture snob as you may think I am. I do however cringe when I hear these words: “sectional” and “rounded arms”. A sectional always sounded like one big mammoth piece of furniture, and I’ve already had two couches with rounded arms, so I wanted something new. Because the shape of our living room is so narrow, there isn’t enough room for a couch and a loveseat, and our best option is a sectional. Turns out, sectionals aren’t as ‘not cute’ as I thought, but 90% of them had rounded arms and I just couldn’t do it.

After sitting on probably 50 different couches, we made our decision and I must say, I’m quite happy. The couch was firm at first, but after jumping on the cushions {yes, one cushion at a time, my husband and I jumped on the cushions while we watched a golf tournament}, they loostened up quite niceley.

{sigh}… so glad that stress is over and my living room looks better than ever, with BEAUCOUP seating for friends. May I present, Macy’s “Bradley” sofa:

Now, if I could just figure out what to do to make my boring little contemporary kitchen look a little bit less generic!

How fun, I love the way it looks. I can’t wait to sit on it and eat a skinny cow.

I want something very similar, but like you, cringe at the word sectional! Love your kitchen too!

@Shannon - YES - skinny cows it is. Although Cameron is going to want me to make cookies… so we may have to make our own ice cream sandwiches!

@Michelle - Thanks! I’m so happy that this ’sectional’ just looks more like a cool couch and chair rather than the ‘mammoth piece of furniture’… Pottery Barn’s Pierce sofa is similarly shaped, and very comfy too! Let me know if you have ideas for my kitchen! ;)

It looks really good. REALLY good! If anyone can make a sectional look good it’s you! Love the pillows too and your new chair (and of course Lane’s Christmas gift too). Your home looks like it should be in a magazine. We will be getting a sectional also the next time we buy furniture - look how much more seating you have!

@Christine - Yes, GO FOR THE SECTIONAL! Apparently the comfort of the sofa is more important than the look, so I’ve learned. You guys would love it!

@Laura - Glad you like it. Sorry you had to hear all about the process! So frustrating!

It looks fabulous! I have been searching for the perfect couch for almost a year now so I totally feel your pain. In fact, my living room has been half painted for SIX MONTHS because I thought my ideal couch might not exist, and I might have to go with different wall color. Sigh…

I just discovered your blog this morning (and subscribed), it’s fabulous here!
